How do people in Illinois (more around Chicago) talk differently?
Q. So I live near Chicago. A few weeks ago I went on a vacation. I was talking to a waiter at a resturaunt and he asked me where I was from. I said the Chicago area. He then starts cracking up because apparently i said Chi - ka - ga. And wanted me to say Illinois. He again laughed at me because I said Illinois without pronouncing the "s" at the end. I thought that was how you were supposed to say Illinois. Well anyways. Do we really talk that funny? I am very curious. Thanks xoxo
Asked by Imagine - Mon Nov 30 22:46:26 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, folks from Chicago talk funny, but so do folks from New York, Boston, Philly, and so on. Each region has its own particular way of pronouncing certain words, not right, not wrong, just different. But that waiter was very rude and demonstrated his own ignorance by laughing at you. That was also not polite. And yes, the 's' in Illinois is silent, even here in California.

Why do they really dislike ketchup or their hot dogs/Superdawgs?
Q. People from Chicago, Illinois, put on their hot dogs mustard, onion, celery salt, pickle spear, sliced tomato, and some chilli peppers. no ketchup at all! Superdawg is a Chicago hot dog joint where they name the product a Superdawg rather than hot dog.
Asked by unknown - Mon Jun 8 01:29:24 2009 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I hear you - someone else posted a question about ketchup on hot dogs being a cardinal sin and I responded that I like it personally. Many of the other responders said only kids younger than 13 do that - sheesh! Then again I didn't grow up in Chicago. Isn't it rather ironic that for all of the dietary sins Chicago is known for that they would put veggies on a hot dog? To me tomato slices and a hot dog is just outright weird. The tomato in ketchup form is the only way for me. I try not to eat hot dogs (fattening) so I've not been to Superdawg myself but people do rave about it. Only hot dogs I've eaten in he city are at Wrigley - those are to die for. And with ketchup.

Would it be cheaper to drive of fly to phoenix, arizona, from Chicago, illinois?
Q. I want to take a trip to Phoenix Arizona and I live in Chicago. I have never really driven anywhere more than 5 hours away. The air fare for the trip would be 789, after taxes, per person, two people are going. The drive according to google maps is about 27 hours of driving. That's drivable to me. I would be driving a nissan altima, so its not a gas guzzler. So I was wondering if driving would be cheaper then paying the $1500 to fly.
Asked by Phil R - Tue Dec 23 16:43:18 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you measure your cost in gas alone, then it would definitely be cheaper to drive than fly -- it's 3,600 miles round trip between those cities, so even at 20 miles per gallon, you'd be paying for 180 gallons of gas rather than $1500 for two plane tickets. There are other costs associated with driving versus flying, though -- wear and tear on the car, hotels or motels (if you choose to stop), and the time involved with driving (54 hours versus 8 hours for a round trip flight). It's up to you to determine whether these costs are worth spending two or more days driving versus half a day flying.

How do people from Illinois feel about this?
Q. Mayor Daley puts $2 million city price tag for Obamafest. Obama will pay election night rally costs by fran spielman chicago Sun-Times City Hall Reporter Mayor Daley today put a $2 million price tag on the cost of city services associated with the giant Barack Obama election night rally in Grant Park. He suggested the United Center as cheaper simpler alternative but was turned down. The mayor said the cash-flushed Obama campaign has agreed to reimburse the city for those services because Chicago is grappling with a $465 million deficit and is in no position to pay for it. How do the contributors fill about this? As a senator he has done nothing for us here in Chicago. I think we have the worst crime rates in the US.
Asked by Gator - Sun Oct 26 20:33:30 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Daley acknowledged that the Grant Park rally would create a logistical nightmare. "You'd have to secure buildings, close down buildings," he said. "You need sanitation. ... You have to secure the CTA. You have to have traffic people. ... You have close streets seven to eight hours before." Looks like a snipers wish come true though. You couldn't pay me to attend that nightmare especially in Chicago.

Do the politicians or the people of Chicago feel any need to clean up their growing reputation for corruption?
Q. There have been 47 convictions of politicians for corruption coming out of Illinois and there are still more to come. Have Chicagoans and folks from Illinois begun to feel any prejudicial treatment from those outside the state, sensing the reputation of corruption is following them, even if they are not personally guilty of such, i.e. guilt by association or just living in what others sense is a breeding ground for corruption? Is there any movement on the part of any Illinois politician to try to clean this up? If not, why not? Experience Base: Former resident of Illinois for 15 years.

How come people from small towns , near big cities, don't eat the big city's style of food?
Q. I find that alot of people from small towns, within a 50-100 mile radious, have no clue what a Chicago Style Pizza is, or hot dog. Its pretty sad really. The reason why I use Chicago, is cause I live in the Chicago area, and I have relatives who live in a small town. They are originally from Chicago, but moved to a small town to get away from the madness that a big city like Chicago brings. When I visit them , I come across people in this town that use Ketchup on their hot dog, and don't know what a Chicago style deep dish pizza is. A. you cant judge the whole city on just a COUPLE of people you've met. also a lot of people in small towns close to big cities don't eat city food because they're so close. its all a "been there done that" kinda thing i guess. i mean they can get it whenever they want so they don't eat it all the time, as opposed to someone who lives hours away from a city who would love experiencing the dining in the city because they cant get it all the time.

Where can I help the homeless in the Chicago, Illinois areas for Christmas or any other time?
Q. I'd like to do something nice for the homeless this season. Well, it doesn't have to be on a holiday anytime would be great. What areas near Chicago or surrounding suburbs would the homeless frequent? There used to be a few people I helped with small items on the weekend at a local metra station. But I live in a residential area, so the township quickly stopped the homeless from hanging out there? I don't know where they went. I would like to provide needed items directly to them from my hands, while acknowledging them as individuals, rather than just donating items to a salvation army or catholic charity in an impersonal way.

A. Since some fairly well-off panhandlers masquerade being homeless, or some homeless turn around and buy alcohol or more drugs, I don't give money directly to them. The only time I did was when the temp. was dropping below zero in Minneapolis and this guy was trying to sleep on a stone bench. I gave him a $20 and told him to go find a warm place to sleep. He would have frozen to death. Contact your American Red Cross for ideas to help serve. You may want to go to a homeless shelter and help serve meals, cheer someone up, listen to their stories , give hope and tell them that you care and will pray with them, contribute toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrushes, female products, etc. ) to the shelter.
